Long known for high-quality fish oil supplements, Nordic Naturals has recently introduced a new type of synergistic digestive supplements. Omega Probiotic combines the anti-inflammatory qualities of a fish oil supplement with the digestive benefits of a probiotic. Certified Natural Health Professional Stuart Tomc recently took time with LoveToKnow to discuss the merits of fish oil and probiotics for digestive and total body health.

About Omega Probiotic

LTK: Please tell us about Omega Probiotic

ST: Omega Probiotic™ contains concentrated fish oil which works in synergy with a unique spore-form probiotic to deliver all the health benefits of omega-3s (EPA+DHA), while also supporting the immune system and promoting an optimal balance of healthy vs. harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. Unlike most probiotics on the market, this species of probiotic is in spore form, which delivers more live cultures than common probiotic yogurt cultures, and delivers those cultures more effectively.

LTK: Why are these nutrients important for digestive health?

ST: These two nutrients are important for digestive health because omega-3 fatty acids support immune health and probiotics promote an optimal balance of healthy vs. harmful bacteria in the gut. About 80% of the immune system is found in the digestive tract so supporting immune health with these two ingredients in Nordic Naturals formula is a great one-two punch.

Omega Probiotic Supplement

LTK: Why did Nordic Naturals develop this new product?

ST: Nordic Naturals wanted to combine the two most important and lacking nutrients in the modern diet in this formula for digestive and gastrointestinal health.

LTK: Why are most diets lacking in these nutrients?

ST: Fish oil is lacking in the American diet for many reasons and one is an inadequate intake of fish. Fish are not palatable to many and some avoid fish due to high mercury and toxin content. The average person does not know that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil are essential for good health and must be obtained through diet. Without adequate essential fatty acid intake many health problems may develop. The best answer is really to take a fish oil supplement and confirm that the product is free is heavy metals and toxins.

Probiotics are lacking in our diet because the American culture does not eat fermented foods regularly or at all. Fermented foods like tempeh, sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha are just not consumed in our culture regularly and these are the foods that supply beneficial bacteria.

About Bacillus Coagulans

LTK: Why is Bacillus coagulans unique?

ST: This particular strain of beneficial bacteria is unique because it is in spore form which delivers more live cultures than common probiotic yogurt cultures and delivers those cultures more effectively.

LTK: What makes this probiotic a better choice than those found in yogurt?

ST: Bacillus coagulans has a safe history of use. By contrast probiotic Lactobacillus species have been implicated in pathogenic and opportunistic infection in healthy and immune-compromised individuals. According to an exhaustive Medline search, Bacillus coagulans has never been shown to be associated with a pathogenic/opportunistic infection.

Bacillus coagulans is highly resistant to bile. Bile is highly antagonistic to Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium and severely limits colonization. Bacillus coagulans is highly competitive and generally hardy. It survives high heat, acid, strong alkaline, and high-pressure environments. It is manufacturing friendly and does not require refrigeration. Additionally, it has a long shelf life when kept dry and at ambient (below 90F) temperature.

Bacillus coagulans uses a wide variety of substrates for its carbon requirements. Fats, proteins, and numerous carbohydrates are metabolized by Bacillus coagulans, making it ideal for improved digestion. Bacillus coagulans is extremely effective at metabolizing lactose containing foods.

Bacillus coagulans is effective in inhibiting pathogens. This is accomplished by lactic acid production (the volume of which is vastly superior to traditional probiotics), bacteriocin production and competitive exclusion.

Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species are not very effective colonizers. Even with epithelial adhesion, massive augmentation is required to maintain effective epithelial density. For instance, VSL3® (Sigma Tau Pharmaceuticals) is a medical food probiotic that requires 350 billion cells of Lactobacillus in order to properly maintain colonization. Bacillus coagulans is effective at 500 million per dose due to the hardy and competitive nature of this organism.

Benefits of Synergistic Digestive Supplements

LTK: What are the benefits of synergistic supplements as opposed to multiple individual supplements?

ST: Synergistic supplements are formulated based on research that shows that the nutrients somehow work in harmony together or that one promotes a more effective absorption or delivery of the other. The advantages of this over individual supplements are improved absorption and better outcomes.

LTK: Who would most benefit from these supplements?

ST: I feel everyone would benefit from Omega Probiotic for the simple reason that fish oil and probiotics need to be taken/consumed daily. It is very easy to become deficient in these two nutrients and our population is representative of this with omega-3 fatty acid deficiency possibly accounting for as many as 96,000 deaths annually and 10-15% of the population suffering with irritable bowel syndrome.

LTK: Does Nordic Naturals offer other synergistic supplements?

ST: Nordic Naturals offers many synergistic supplements and a full list would be found at www.nordicnaturals.com. Some examples are Omega LDL, Omega Longevity, and Omega Blood Sugar.

LTK: How can people decide if Omega Probiotic is right for them?

ST: For consumers already taking a fish oil supplement and a probiotic supplement this is an obvious choice to reduce the amount of pills one takes daily. For those not taking these types of supplements they should consult with a health care practitioner about their possible need to take Omega Probiotic. As mentioned before, these ingredients are not being consumed daily and the population is in short supply so taking Omega Probiotic may really improve some healthy conditions many are suffering with at this time.

Digestive supplements are a great option whether you are experiencing digestive problems or simply want to optimize your intestinal health. Look for Nordic Naturals Omega Probiotic wherever you normally buy supplements, or check their store locator to find a retailer near you.
