Joe, thanks for leaving a comment. The answer depends on what your doctor recommends, since the amount in the injection can vary.

Is it okay to inject Vitamin B12 twice monthly, if I haven't had any side effects from taking it to date? Or is once monthly the limit?

James, thanks for leaving a comment. We appreciate it.

Ann, it's best to call your doctor and ask about these symptoms. Only he or she can advise you. What you described may be a side effect of the injection - or it could be one of many things. Only your doctor can tell for sure. Thanks for leaving a comment, and feel better soon.

Hi Ann, I have been suffering from Pernicious Anemia for 5 months now and i have also had similiar symptons to the ones you have described. I would arrange a consultation with you doctor sooner than later, my sypmtons (apart from tiredness) have all gone over the period naturally, however i would suggest a visit to be on the safe side..

I wish you the best..

I'm worried because two days after getting b12 injection,I suffered powerful deep pains in my legs and arms, after 2nd injection it was only my arms and hands and now its my hands most nights, when I move them the pain goes away, but still its worrying, can you give me any insight into whats causing this. I have no other symptoms, thanks, Ann

Tommy, thanks for leaving a comment. Because your girlfriend has epilepsy, she needs to talk to her doctor about health concerns. I'm not sure how or if vitamin B12 impacts epilepsy, and because each case is different, a consultation with her doctor is in order. There are supplement (pill) forms of the vitamin, but only her doctor can say which is the best one to use.

Lar, thanks so much for leaving a comment and sharing your experience with others. I wish you good health!

I developed severe allergic reactions to both Cyanocobalamin and Hydroxycobalamin injections. Pernicious anaemia came on after birth of my daughter 12 years ago. I also have low thyroid for which I take synthroid. I have had success for the last 8 years with daily sublingual B12 (1000mcg - nice cherry flavour too) - beats the injection and deficiency is no longer an issue.

Jen, you should call your doctor and tell him about the side effects. Only he can advise you on this. Feel better and thank you for leaving a comment.

I found out I have low B12 and after almost two weeks of first B12 tablets and then sublinguals, I was given a B12 shot yesterday. Last night I could not sleep, felt a little anxious and wired. I have nausea and some diarrhea. How long will this last, and should I just stop doing the injections and stick with the sublingual? I am only going to have them once a month according to my doctor.

Kat, I am so sorry to hear that you have gotten sick from the B12 injections. My thoughts are with you. Best of luck for a speedy recovery.

I have had B12 injections for the last two years and with the last two injections I have suffered an allergic reaction going so far as my tounge, face and airways swelling, which was extremely frightening. I now have to go to see a specialist to find out why my body has suddenly started rejecting the B12, as without it, I suffer a slow painful death. I cant go on having the injections just to react to them continuously, as the heavy doses of steriods I have to take for the reaction can have serious side affects and damage my health too.

Johanna, if they happen so regularly, I'd be suspicious of the injections. Do tell your doctor. Perhaps there's an alternative to the injections for you? Good luck and good health.

I have penicious anemia and have had 3 injections in the last 7 days. Approximately 24 hours after each injections I have suffered episodes of nearly passing out, tingling in my arms, struggling to talk and general light headiness. Do you think the episodes are a result of side effects to the injections. I have been to hospital and had blood tests after the the first two sets of episodes but nothing particularly abnormal was discovered.

Barbara, thanks for leaving a comment. I haven't heard of this as a side effect of the shot. If your triglycerides are rising, it can indicate a number of possible health issues, so please talk to your doctor.

-- Contributed by: Jeanne Grunert

I have been taking B12 injections (once a month) for about 8 months. For some reason my triglycer- ides have doubled. My diet has not changed. Could this be the cause. I do not have a deficiency, I just thought why not!!!!

Erika, thanks for leaving a comment. I think you should consult your doctor with both questions; I believe side effects should dissipate after stopping the injections, but you definitely need to discuss it with your physician. Good luck and feel better.

I have been injecting B12, and have learned that it was way to high a dose, too often. I am experiencing some of the more serious side effects. I know that the liver stores B12 for a long time; will my side effects go away after I stop the shots? Is there anything I can do to help with this?

Hi Diane,

Leg pain is a common side effect. Call your doctor and let him know.

I gave blood on Monday, had severe leg cramps on Wednesday and took my first B-12 on Wednesday. I am injecting my self daily (dr Prescribed) Today, Friday I have had SEVERE leg cramps all evening. Can this be related to the B-12 injection or the B12 defiency

Hi Kelly, thanks for leaving your comment. By now you've probably called your doctor's office. If not call them immediately. Only your doctor can confirm if it's a side effect or something simple, as you said like chigger bites. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

-- Contributed by: Jeanne Grunert

Please advise. I had a B12 injection on Wednesday. Thursday I began breaking out with a rash around my neck and eyes. It is very itchy, and red similar to chigger bites but not in the usual place as chigger bites. Seems to be getting worse. Should I be concerned as this falls under your "uncommon and serious" side effects?

-- Contributed by: Kelly

Jacob, you may be having a reaction to the injection or something else may be going on. It's best to discuss your concerns with your doctor. Please call his or her office and let them know that you feel you are having side effects. Feel better!

I had a vitamin b12 shot yesterday, and i woke up today and i was extremely confused and tired. should i continue to get the shots? i am still very confused and tired right now.

-- Contributed by: Jacob

Kate, have you told your doctor about these side effects? If not, please do so - and I think it's a good idea to talk to him or her about switching to tablets. Good luck!

-- Contributed by: Jeanne Grunert

I had an injection every two days for two weeks and now i have finished that course, i will have them every three months. i have had a rash covering my chest, back and forehead; hot flushes but no weight loss (Unfortunatly!) Im not sure if i should ask to have B12 tablets instead of the injections because of these side effects; Not sure if it was because i had alot of them in a short amount of time though. I will keep you informed if they persist in three months time.

I have been getting Vitamin B12 shots weekly for 4 weeks now along with a high potein diet at a weightloss clinic -I have a few small red bumps on my face (high cheek bone) and a red bump right above my earlobe that swells like a large pimple then goes down and sore to touch -no other problems - I have lost 10lbs but I feel that is the diet and increased walking. Could the b12 shot cause this? I am going to discontinue the shots - Any advice?

Sarah, thanks so much for sharing your experience with our readers. You may have helped someone today by telling your story. Good luck with your health and your pregnancy!

-- Contributed by: Jeanne Grunert

I am 30 wks pregnant with twins and i had to have a course of B12 inj. 2 days after the 1st i was very sick, couldn't keep anything down including water. They stopped my inj's and after a few days it seemed to get a little better - we weren't sure if it was a bug at first. They gave me another inj but it kicked off worse than ever - for a week i had no energy due to lack of food and drink. Again the inj's were stopped and i am out of bed today - 6 days later. Maybe its just because i'm pregnant i had side effects but the doctor knew of no one having these side effects. But it was the worst feeling ever especially when i have other children to look after who thankfully were cared for by the granny's!

Jackie, it may be a complication of the injection rather than the B12. You should definitely call your doctor immediately to report the symptoms, since numbness can be a sign of many things. Good luck and hope you feel better.

-- Contributed by: Jeanne Grunert

I gave myself an injection for b12 because my doctor did it and i liked the results. When i did it in one leg a few weeks ago i have had a weird numbness in my injected leg. I have had some since in my hip with no problem. Should i be concerned about my leg?

-- Contributed by: jackie

Hello, yes, some muscle soreness is common. If you have any concerns though - or if the soreness feels extreme - call your doctor to discuss it.

-- Contributed by: Jeanne Grunert

I got my first B12 shots yesterday. This morning i have some discomfort in my legs. It basically feels like i have worked out too much and my upper leg muscles are sore. Is this common? Will it go away?

-- Contributed by: question

Paula, according to many of the reputable medical information websites, the side effects shouldn't last more than a day or so. If you are experiencing any side effects longer than that, please call your doctor immediately.

-- Contributed by: Jeanne Grunert

Are these long term side effects? How long after the shot is given will these side effects remain?

-- Contributed by: Paula

Mrs. Gross, that may be simply side effect of the injection itself. If it still troubles you, please call the doctor who gave you the shot to talk to him or her about side effects. Feel better!

I SUFFER FROM ANEMIA AND VITAMIN B12.I RECIVED MY FIRST B12 SHOT ON TODAY AND MY ARM IS VERY SORE IT HURTS WHEN I LIFT IT UP.

-- Contributed by: MRS.GROSS

I suffer from Thyroid Disease and Anemia and have a severe Vitamin B12 deficiency - older folks are more likely to also have vitamin deficiencies - I get my shots once a week and they help tremendously with my chronic fatigue. It's not a hype if you need it. Although she's 98, she's entitled to live the rest of her life with vigor if she has the will. I imagine her doctor will oblige if she insists and there are no contraindications for her - this is just an opinion and not a substitute for proper medical advice by a physician.

My 98 year old mother went to her GP doctor for a B12 in jection because she gets very tired. The doctor said that b12 shots are a "HYPE" that unless she does not eat any green veggies, B12 shots are a scam

Hi rd,

A deficiency of B12 can interfere with blood clotting.

Can B12 interfere with blood clotting?

Hi Trudy,

This article holds the basics. I suggest that you talk with your doctor about it, especially if you are experiencing symptoms you think may be related to side effects.

I'm taking B12 shots and I would like more information.

-- Contributed by: trudy testa

B12 is not an appetite suppressant. However, if you have more energy from taking a B12 supplement it can certainly help you lose weight in a round-about sort of way.

If you are losing weight for an unknown reason or have lost your appetite you should see your doctor to rule out possible illness.
