Smathern, you raise some good points. There's been a long standing debate in multiple sclerosis research about the role vitamin D (or lack of it) plays in the development of this debilitating disease. For the most part, the RDA of any vitamin is the recommended daily allowance. Scientists are still searching for the optimal amounts, researching theories that vitamins can prevent disease. The problem however is that people often get into trouble overdosing themselves on vitamins and supplements without understanding all the side effects and ramifications of their choices. Thank you for leaving a comment.
-- Contributed by: Jeanne GrunertRecent articles actually suggest that it would require as much as 1,000 micrograms/day in order to invoke an overdose in Vitamin D. Daily requirements are suggested in order to prevent ricket's but recent research indicates that Vitamin D supplements may be critical in preventing multiple sclerosis.
-- Contributed by: SmathernMary Jo, there is NO known supplement that will ward off the flu in any dose. I strongly recommend that your son in law talk to his child's doctor about which supplements to give; and never exceed the RDA for any vitamin when giving supplements to children. Definitely consult the child's pediatrician on this one. Thanks for leaving a comment.
-- Contributed by: Jeanne GrunertMy son in law wants to give a 4 year old and 6 year old 2000IU daily for 6-8 mo. to avoid the flu. Is this a high enough dose to cause serious side effects or irreversible organ malfuctons?

Eye sensitivity and nausea could be due to many other illnesses too, which is why I recommend getting it checked out with your physician. But do discontinue the supplements right now - you may find the problem clears up once you stop the supplements. Feel better.
-- Contributed by: Jeanne GrunertI've been feeling very nauseated and and have developed eye sensitivity to light. I was taking 2000 ui a day of vitamin D

A holistic health practitioner or naturopathic doctor may also be able to help you. Good luck and good health, and thank you for leaving a comment.
-- Contributed by: Jeanne GrunertI was diagnosed with Vitamin D defiency last year, and was given Calcifol Sachets to take. Trouble is, I haven't reacted well at all to them and wondered if there was any other medication I could take for this. I had an injection last November.

Leg pain can be a symptom of Vitamin D deficiency, but I would suggest to stay in touch with your doctor to let him know what's going on and to see what he recommends just in case the leg pain is not caused by the deficiency.
-- Contributed by: Donna SundbladMy husband was diagnosed with Vitamin D deficiency two weeks ago. He is taking 50,000IU's Vitamin D capsules per week. He was doing fine in week one. Now he is experiencing pain in legs. (He had this prior to taking this off and on) Is this normal?.
-- Contributed by: Ann KoralIt seems odd that you would have this type of reaction to vitamin D, especially since this was under a doctor's supervision.
I suppose it is possible that you have a sensitivity, but it is hard to say without knowing what else might be going on.
-- Contributed by: Kathleen RobertsThe same thing happened to me. I'm in a medical research study and the doctor put me on 50,000 units of vitamin D each day for the first week and then 1 50,000 unit tablet for 12 weeks after. My face continues to break out despite an aggressive routine to prevent it.
-- Contributed by: ShenitaPlease let me know your opinion on taking 50,000 of Vitamin D/week. I took two doses one week apart and my face became very dry with pink swollen patches that peeled for over a week. I waited a month then took two doses two weeks apart and the same thing happened. My doctor told me to keep taking it and the pharmacist didn't think Vitamin D would cause that reaction but I can't figure anything else that I have done different and I think it was the "D". What are your thoughts?
